EmpowerRise: Refugee Youth Skill Development Initiative
Project Overview:
The EmpowerRise: Refugee Youth Skill Development Initiative is a transformative vocational training program designed to address the critical challenge of limited economic empowerment and skill development opportunities for refugee youth in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement. By leveraging our existing infrastructure and team of volunteer skilled trainers, we aim to empower 900 refugee youth over the course of one year through hands-on training in high-demand vocational skills.
Project Goals:
Empower: Equip refugee youth with practical vocational skills to enhance their economic independence and self-reliance.
Develop: Foster job creation and entrepreneurial opportunities within the refugee community.
Alleviate Poverty: Address poverty and economic vulnerability through skill development and employment opportunities.
Build Resilience: Strengthen the resilience of refugee youth, enabling them to better navigate and overcome the challenges of displacement.
Project Objectives:
Objective 1: Implement a series of four cohorts, each lasting three months, to provide vocational training to 225 refugee youth per cohort, totaling 900 participants by the end of the year.
Objective 2: Conduct 36 vocational training sessions per cohort, focusing on high-demand skills such as tailoring, hairdressing, soap making, and culinary arts (baking).
Objective 3: Facilitate community-based employment, entrepreneurship, and market linkages for program graduates to ensure the practical application of their newly acquired skills.
Target Audience:
This project targets 900 refugee youth aged 15-30 in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement, focusing on those who lack access to vocational training and economic opportunities.
Project Implementation:
1. Vocational Skills Training:
Training Areas: Tailoring, Hairdressing, Soap Making, Culinary Arts (Baking).
Training Facilities: Utilizing the 7 classrooms available at our facility.
Trainers: 10 volunteer skilled professionals from within our community.
Training Schedule: Each cohort will consist of 36 sessions, spread over three months, with each session accommodating 40-45 participants.

Community-Based Employment: Graduates will be integrated into local businesses or community projects requiring their new skills.
Entrepreneurship: Support for trainees to start small businesses, including mentorship and business development assistance.
Market Linkages: Establishment of community-based market linkages to help trainees sell their products and services.
Ongoing Mentorship: Continuous support and follow-up to monitor progress and address challenges faced by trainees.
Project Justification:
Nakivale Refugee Settlement faces significant challenges related to economic empowerment, particularly for youth. Our community surveys identified the four selected skills as being in high demand, with the potential to generate sustainable income. By focusing on these areas, EmpowerRise directly addresses the community's needs, fostering self-reliance, resilience, and economic growth.
Specific Skill Justifications:
Tailoring: High demand for custom-made garments and clothing repairs.
Hairdressing: Consistent need for personal grooming services across all age groups.
Soap Making: Essential for daily hygiene with strong local demand and income potential.
Culinary Arts (Baking): High demand for bakery products, particularly bread, within the settlement.
Impact and Outcomes:
Short-Term: 900 refugee youth equipped with vocational skills, improved self-reliance, and immediate employment opportunities.
Long-Term: Sustainable income generation, increased economic independence, and the creation of small businesses within the refugee community, contributing to overall community development.
Monitoring and Evaluation:
Regular impact assessments will be conducted to evaluate the success of the training program and its impact on participants' livelihoods. Adjustments will be made as needed to enhance the program's effectiveness and sustainability.
